History

Villa Freya was the house of the 20th century British explorer Freya Madaleine Stark, one of the first women to venture into the Middle East. The writer lived part of her life in this house after her friend Herbert Young gave it to her. She loved walking in the garden, taking care of her roses and hosting important personalities of the time.

The park

Covering about 5000 square metres, Villa Freya's garden is the dream setting for any outdoor event. Ideally subdivided into many natural rooms, each with its own plant species, the garden is a magical place that captivates the senses with its fragrances, lights and shadows, colours and stunning views.

The lawn

Villa Freya's lawn is a large green space where you can feel free to trample the untreated grass, dance barefoot or have a feast under the stars. It is a natural slightly sloping lawn which is shaded by two huge kaki trees and a long avenue of hornbeams.

The Orangery

The orangery or greenhouse is a special, intimate and creative space that looks out over the garden with its white glass windows. It is ideal for any photo setting and it is flexible to the mood of the event.

The Roman Theatre

The archaeological site of the Roman theatre from the 2nd century AD adds prestige and historical value to the park of Villa Freya. The remains of the ancient Roman theatre create an amazing scenography where one can celebrate an important event while feeling part of a millenary history.

The Holm Oak

In the park of Villa Freya there are four centuries-old holm oaks but two in particular represent one of the most interesting natural attractions of the garden. Under the foliage of the great holm oak, you can feel the strength of the roots and the energy of an uncontaminated place.

The Organic Vegetable Garden

The terracing in the southern part of the park, after being recently cleaned accurately, has been transformed in a vegetable garden like in the past (Napoleonic mapping no. 1377). Therefore, a neglected space infested with weeds has become an attractive organic vegetable garden where local vegetables are cultivated in synergy with flowers. The cultivation is done by hand and we use organic fertilisers as well as mulching with straw and jute.

The Management

The family management of the historical ad natural complex is a commitment based on a love for the land and its enhancement. In recent years, the management has facilitated an eco-friendly maintenance of the garden, favouring the biodiversity of the place and supporting the needs of nature. There are new emerging projects that combine educational proposals with an experiential tourism in order to promote a new way of protecting our landscape. In doing so, it is required an investment of energy and dedication, but above all a public that is aware of the importance of the environment.

Villa Freya is a place to be experienced.
